In 2000 I fled war torn Somalia, where I was born and raised. I spent the following six years living and studying in Damascus, Syria, where I learned Arabic and received my secondary education before moving to the United States.
I continued my studies in Seattle, Washington, where I graduated from Western Washington University with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. After hearing the great work being done by other community members and leaders with a background similar to mine, I decided that Portland Maine would be home for me. I fell in love with this community which is my home and where I met the love of my life, Halimo, who became my wife. Together we built our business providing essential home care services to the elderly and people with disabilities.
Additionally my work with Gateway Community Services and The Portland Board of Public Education has allowed me to serve the community and help people in need while gaining experience in leadership, public policy development, budget management as well as strategic planning for communities like ours.
I am honored to announce my candidacy for the Maine House of Representatives as a Democratic candidate, seeking to represent District 118.
As a mental health case manager and a former member of the Portland School Board At-Large, I bring a diverse range of experiences and a deep commitment to creating positive change within our community. Our family business is a Personal Care Agency that provides essential home care services to the elderly and people with disabilities.
My commitment to community involvement includes helping newcomers navigate the challenges of American life as a volunteer with neighborhood non-profits like Gateway Community Services and Catholic charities, offering support to both adults and children. I am devoted to the progress and prosperity of our city and, like my wife Halimo, I have a great appreciation for its cultural diversity.
